Measuring Freedom

چکیده
Suppose a principle of distributive justice states that social institutions should maximize the freedom least well-off. Understanding how to do so would be easier if only depended on one good, like income. If it depends instead composite index primary goods, question arises: Which combination goods can well-off? This is John Rawls’ indexing problem. Solving requires addressing two related problems. The first consists in evaluating, theory, under which conditions acceptable substitute is, their substitution rates. second evaluating substitutions are feasible practice. article proposes framework think clearly about this problem within Rawlsian, resourcist conception justice. I conclude by discussing path towards solving While further empirical exploration needed, plausible assumptions regimes suggest maximizing well-off likely require giving them access position with balanced goods.

On the Possibility of Measuring Freedom: A Kantian Perspective
More than three decades after Sen‟s first formulation of the so-called “capability approach”, practitioners have yet to measure a capability set. This raises fundamental questions about the empirical viability of Sen‟s approach. In this paper, we argue that Kantian philosophy may offer valuable insights into how to deal with this problem, as the methodological difficulty which has hampered the ...
متن کاملUsing Accelerometers for Measuring Rotational Degrees-of-Freedom
In many applications, such as structural testing or vehicle collision studies, rotational data are required. Modal analysis will mainly use it to identify rotational degrees of freedom (DOFs), where crash testing will mainly look into rotational inertia. Measuring rotational acceleration can be done by computing measurements from linear sensors, but this leads inevitably to an increase in measu...
متن کاملMeasuring the Allocation of Control Across Degrees-of-Freedom
We propose a new metric, the 0-metric, that quantifies how a user is allocating control across multiple degreesof-freedom (dofs) while performing a docking task using an input device. The development of the 0-metric is based on two previous metrics from the literature, integrality [1] and inefficiency [2]. Integrality is a measurement in the time dimension only, and says nothing about the magni...

متن کاملMeasuring Economic Freedom: Better Without Size of Government
The Heritage Foundation and the Fraser Institute measure economic freedom in nations using indices with ten and five indicators respectively. Eight of the Heritage indicators and four of the Fraser-indicators are about specific types of institutional quality, like rule of law, the protection of property, and the provision of sound money. More of these is considered to denote more economic freed...
